How to find the best-fit supervisor for me?

Things to consider

1. Ask for referrals or recommendations from your instructors or peers.

2.. Ask yourself, "What is my vision for my career?" After answering, seek LPC-S who aligns with your goals and values.

3. Search platforms, such as Psychology Today or LinkedIn for example, for LPC-S who are currently accepting new interns (LPC-A). Once you've located some LPC-S, read their bios, look for descriptions about their work experience and supervision modality preferences.

4. Interview the clinical supervisors before "signing on the dotted line". There are several Youtube videos on how to find a LPC-S and specific questions to ask them.

5. Clinical supervision is an investment in your time and financial resources. However, selecting the right LPC-S can yield a significant ROI (return on investment). Be aware of low cost supervision as it may come at a higher price of poor preparation for real-life issues that will come about when you are fully licensed.

6. Understand that LPC-S have to take full professional responsibility for your activities as a counselor while under their supervision. Just as you are vetting LPC-S for a right-fit, clinical supervisors have to do the same. Seek out a supervisor that is genuinely concerned about your preparation and future as a clinician. One who wants you to develop into a competent, ethical, and authentic LPC.
